Nehemiah 1:11 – O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.
Verse 11 of Nehemiah chapter 1 is an end of a prayer. In this prayer, Nehemiah does something extraordinary. He first asks that God would listen to his prayers and not just his prayers, but the prayers of “your servants who delight to fear your name.” To fear God’s name is to want the might, the glory, and the fullness of God’s power. So, yes, we delight to fear God’s name because it is the name above all other names. We delight to fear God’s name because God knows how sinful we are and in his justice he displays mercy. We delight to fear God’s name because his name is trustworthy. Who else can come to our rescue when we call? Who else can uphold us when we’re weak? Who else is unchanging and unwavering in truth and grace? A delightful fear of God is a bold surrender to humility. It is a sensitivity of heart towards the majesty of God and God desires that we run to him and not from him. He desires reconciliation, for a broken and contrite heart he will not and cannot despise. So, yes, we delight to fear the name of the Lord because he is attentive to our prayers.
