Devotion: Deliver Us From Evil (Jesus’s Prayer)

Matthew 6:13 – And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

In Matthew 6:13 Jesus is teaching his disciples how to pray. He makes a point in this example of prayer to call out the adversary, also known as the devil. Make no mistake about it, the devil goes about like a roaring lion seeking whom he can devour and he does it with lies. As believers in Jesus our biggest temptation is not sexual lust, or the love of money, or even the praise of man. As believers our biggest temptation is believing the lie that Jesus is not enough, that he won’t satisfy, or that somehow God is withholding from you or that he is punishing you for some act you committed some time ago and therefore you can’t be blessed. The strategy of the enemy is to put thoughts in your mind that are false or feelings in your heart that are contrary to the salvation you have received. Jesus’s prayer to be kept or delivered from the evil one is a prayer that should catapult every believer to the one place that destroys every work and lie of the devil and that is to the word of God. The word of God is true. The word of God is sharper than a double-edged sword. The word of God is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. The word of God exposes darkness and radiates his love and power. Don’t be alarmed by temptation or the trials you face. Go to the anchor of your soul and feast on his truth. Feast on the revelation that he is a deliverer, one who sets us free from the bondage of lies.
