John 4:15 – The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
This encounter Jesus has with the woman at the well is a picture of how counter-cultural, out-of-the box, and disruptive to the norm Christ was. This woman was an outcast, a loner, and one who sought avoidance at all costs for her past was a less than favorable one. Yet, despite the common practice at the time, she took a risk and engaged with the one who could give her exactly what she had been missing: fulfillment and acceptance. Let’s be honest, faith is risky. Oftentimes it requires going against what makes sense, walking the road less traveled, being odd, and rebelling against what may feel good, is easy, and yields quick results. Faith is risky but the risk is right. I want to be clear that walking by faith is not the same as playing Russian roulette. This woman’s plea for Christ to give her something that would satisfy her for the rest of her days was not a shot in the dark. It was not blind faith. Through her conversation with Jesus she received a revelation that he was not just a mere man, but he was the Messiah. Therefore, she let down her guard, she removed the emotional walls, she put aside her cynicism and skepticism and was willing to taste and see that the Lord is good and only he can make it to where she would never thirst again.
