Devotion: Hear My Cry

Psalm 61:1 – Hear my cry, O God, attend unto my prayer.

One would characterize David as a courageous man, a man of strength, and a man of great determination. Yet, even this man, this king, knew he needed to be led. In all his greatness, there was a desperate need for direction. David felt no shame when he cried out to the God of Heaven in a moment of faintness and pleaded for him to listen and respond. He confessed his anxiousness and declared he needed someone greater to handle the weight he was under. His request wasn’t selfish nor erroneous. It was quite the opposite. His request was submissive and showed confidence in the one he knew could and would respond to his plea. Don’t think for a moment that God is unwilling to give attention to what matters to you. Don’t think for a moment that God is incapable of hearing your earnest moans and groans. Don’t think for a moment that God’s hands are tied or that he is powerless to respond. God is a very present help in the time of trouble and there is nothing more pleasing to him than knowing that those who trust him come boldly to him seeking a response to their need. There is nothing more satisfying to our Heavenly Father than knowing that his children request his protection and guidance. There is nothing more pleasing to the God of the universe than to know we see him as the very source of our strength, the balm that heals, and the well that satisfies our thirst. David was pursuant of a response from God. He had seen enough of what God had done to know that he isn’t a God that hides from us. He’s the God that tells us to ask and we shall receive, to seek and we will find, to knock and the door will be opened. He’s the God of availability and he loves to answer prayers.
