Devotion: Lord, Save Me (Peter’s Prayer)

Matthew 14:30 – But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”

Matthew 14:30 captures a short prayer from a disciple named Peter. Peter is literally doing the impossible. He’s walking on water, specifically the sea of Galilee. As he’s standing on the water, face-to-face with Jesus and begins to walk towards Jesus he becomes aware of the elements, the wind, the movement of the waves and he begins to sink. In a desperate plea he prays, “Lord, save me.” I see Peter’s prayerful cry not only as a prayer of desperation but also a prayer of assurance and confidence in Jesus. Peter asks to be saved by Jesus because he believed he could despite being gripped with terrifying fear. His desperate prayer was simultaneously a statement of truth that empowered Christ to act. Peter’s call to be saved or rescued appealed to the heart of Jesus. Jesus saves to restore, to redeem, to strengthen, he saves to settle us, establish us, and to make us complete. I encourage you to never tire of asking Christ to save you, not as a means to question the salvation you received at conversion, but as a means to glory in the one who gives you the courage to pray to be saved, the one who adds faith where it may be depleted, the one who despite any condition can still the boat and calm the sea. In the presence of fear, God can save.
