Psalm 119:33 – Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end.
In this Psalm, David prays that he be helped to keep the word of God and keep it all of his days. We all can relate to needing this type of help daily. It isn’t that God’s word is grievous and impossible to follow. It’s not. It’s the fact that we live in the flesh and there are times we are weakened and are staggering through the trials and temptations we face. There are times that tribulations become so burdensome that we forget God’s instruction, his voice seemingly becomes distant. Teach us, O Lord, how to keep your word through it all. David was a man who had a deep value and love of God’s word. He found himself delighting in the purity and authority of God’s truth. David was hard-pressed to keep the commandments of God because he knew they were life-giving and he knew obedience is what pleased God. His prayer for instruction reveals that he became aware that he is limited in what he knows and is able to do, that even as king he needed to learn. We know a lot, we’ve seen a lot, we’ve been to a lot of places. However, none of that should ever take the place of us positioning ourselves to be instructed in the way of God’s word. Aligning ourselves as a pupil of Jesus is to say that we want very much to please him, it is to say that we trust that his way is faultless, it is to say that his way is better, it is to say that his way promises protection, it is to say that his way is indestructible, it is to say that his way is the truest source of joy and peace, and it is to say that God’s word will cause us to triumph in every situation.
