Devotion: You Will Prevail

Jeremiah 1:19 – They will fight against you, but they will not prevail against you, for I am with you declares the Lord, to deliver you.

You will prevail! That is God’s promise to Jeremiah. The first part of that promise that none of us really like is that there will be opposition. In other words, there will be a cause for your victory. There will be a cause for God to show his superiority in strength, his superiority in wisdom, his superiority in power, his superiority in judgment, and his superiority in what he delights in. God made clear to Jeremiah that he delights in giving deliverance. He delights in scattering our enemies. He delights in confronting sin. And He delights in crushing any threat to his righteousness. As God speaks to Jeremiah, he speaks with assurance. In a couple of verses earlier, in verse 17, God tells Jeremiah to get up and commands him to not be dismayed. God commands Jeremiah to not stay in the place of discouragement and disappointment for he will strengthen him with his word. Therefore, don’t be disheartened, child of God. The Lord will give strength, the Lord will vindicate, the Lord will bless, the Lord will root out, The Lord will pull down, the Lord will build up, and the Lord will plant. God’s promises stand true because he is the fulfiller of them. His word accomplishes what he sets out for it to do, and he is a God that cannot lie. More importantly, God keeps his promises to us because he knows who he’s making his promises to. He’s making promises to those he knew before the world began, to those he formed, to those he sanctified, and to those he ordained from the beginning of time to turn the world upside down.
