Devotion: Help My Unbelief (A Father’s Prayer)

Mark 9:24 – And immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.”

There are times where we are faced with the reality of our humanity and the duality of one who believes in Jesus. Let me be clear, faith in Jesus does not mean you will never have moments of unbelief. However, faith in Jesus is the antidote for unbelief because faith in Jesus illuminates the truth that while my head may be struggling with believing, my heart is not. To believe in Jesus is to be fully convinced that he is all we need, that he has all authority and all capability. Our belief in Jesus is a work of the heart and not simply a battle in the mind. Therefore, we must do what Peter suggests in 1 Peter 1:13 when he says prepare your mind for action, be sober-minded, and hope to the end for the grace that is found in the revelation of Jesus Christ. Our revelation of Jesus is greater than our doubts and fears. What I believe in my heart will overpower what’s going on in my mind. We have to fight the pride of unbelief and realize there is no answer and no real satisfaction apart from our belief in Jesus. For Jesus tells us that all things are possible to him that believes.
