Nehemiah 6:9 – For they all made us afraid, saying, their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
At the very end of this prayer Nehemiah asks God to do something we all need daily: to be strengthened. Take this prayer and extend it beyond the daily grind of things. For it is clear that we need God to strengthen our hands to carry our cross. We need God to strengthen our hands to keep working. We need God to strengthen our hands to fight and defend. We need God to strengthen our hands to restrain. We need God to strengthen our hands to pray. We need God to strengthen our hands to gather. We need God to strengthen our hands to cut off and lift up. We need God to strengthen our hands to bind up. We need God to strengthen our hands to receive. We need to God to strengthen our hands to push off the ground when we fall down. We need God to strengthen our hands to hold fast to his promises. It’s really clear. We need God to strengthen our hands.
What’s so great and amazing about God is that we can turn to him in very simple means and ways and ask him to do what is most needful for us, to simply strengthen us. God is a very present help in the time of trouble. God is a refuge and through his great might can subdue our enemies, both internal and external. Saints, I encourage you to let God strengthen you daily, to be strong in the grace that is found in Christ Jesus, that no matter where you find yourself that you echo the words of Nehemiah, “Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.”
