Devotion Introduction: Think of His Goodness

Devotions heralding a good God.

We would do well to intensely view God as good. All of our happiness, the longevity of our hope is in knowing and intensely reflecting God’s goodness. Throughout the Bible the goodness of God Almighty is spoken of and witnessed. None more than in the Psalms as the writers routinely make known the goodness of God. In Psalms 119:68 the writer declares these words, “God is good and does good.” I cannot help but be thrilled and overly infatuated with this two part sentence. “God is good,” decrees the writer. I echo those sentiments a million times over. Yes! By nature he is good! His existence is good! His intentions are good! His plans are good! His dealings are good! Yes! From the beginning his goodness oozed as his Spirit dwelt over land and water, creating life and every landform. Even now we enjoy God’s goodness when we go for long evening walks or hikes up mountains and trails. We enjoy his goodness when we visit streams of flowing water or lay in meadows to see the sun rise or set. The words of Psalm 119:68 deserve signage on highway bulletin boards and on the walls of every city hall, “God is good and does good!”

Oh, but it gets better!  Not only does the Psalmist speak of God’s nature as good but his acts also. With confident affirmation the second part of Psalm 119:68 says, “God does good.” I ask you to ingest those words. I ask you to hold them dear. When strife hits, remember, “God does good.” When despair grips you, remember, “God does good.” When all manner of sickness, confusion, and uncertainty come knocking at your door, remember, “God does good.” The significance of this verse is such that we should know that in every state we find ourselves in and in every circumstance God’s nature of good and his acts of good are fully on display. I pray that the words of Psalm 119:68 are intensified in your life as you recite them. May they lead to worship and praise! May they lead to the fullness of this revelation that in his preservation, God is and does good. In his judgement, God is and does good. In his wrath, God is and does good. In his justice, God is and does good. There’s so much that God does, so much good that he is that we must make it our daily mission to think of his goodness.

As you read, or listen, to these short devotions, take the time to think aloud on the scriptures shared and what it means for God to display his goodness by means of mercy, faithfulness, forgiveness, deliverance, and preservation. I implore you to sit with and dwell on the words of the scriptures. Read them as lifelines and call to remembrance that the word of God is eternal. All else will fade but God’s word will remain forever. That’s good news. The more we can intently and intensely meditate on his word, the more we become like him and experience the fullness of his goodness.
